Oceanwide Expeditions Sets Sails for Future with Eco-Friendly Expedition Ship Initiative
The Netherlands-based Oceanwide Expeditions has taken a significant step towards expanding its fleet by signing a Letter of Intent (LoI) to build two eco-sail expedition vessels. This new initiative is part of the company’s commitment to promoting environmentally sustainable tourism in polar regions.
Each ship is designed to host 146 passengers and will feature an array of environmentally friendly innovations, including a hybrid sail propulsion system. This design aims to decrease fuel usage and lower emissions by combining wind-assisted propulsion with traditional power systems.
These new vessels will evolve from Oceanwide’s existing Hondius-class model and are expected to enhance operational performance and improve the onboard experience for guests. The first vessel is set to launch in 2029, while the second will be delivered in 2030. Commercial operations for both ships are anticipated to commence in early 2027, with detailed specifications, including names and shipbuilder information, to be disclosed as the project progresses.
This development aligns with Oceanwide Expeditions’ broader strategy of integrating technological advancements in the expedition cruise market. Notably, the company’s previous ship, Hondius, was the first small expedition vessel constructed to meet Polar Class 6 standards, specifically designed for polar adventures.
In addition to new builds, Oceanwide Expeditions is actively upgrading its current fleet in accordance with environmental standards set by organizations like the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) and the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO).
Company executives view this letter of intent as a pivotal moment in fleet development, emphasizing that the legacy of sailing is integral to their operations. The new vessels aim to incorporate modern sustainable technologies and significantly reduce environmental impacts while maintaining an exceptional guest experience that has become synonymous with the brand. Further announcements regarding this initiative will be made as final construction agreements are established.
