A-Rosa Sena Ship Involved in Collision with Amsterdam Road Bridge During Departure

On the night of March 25, 2026, the river cruise vessel A-Rosa Sena collided with a road bridge while departing from Amsterdam. The allision resulted in a minor injury to a crew member and led to the evacuation of over 200 passengers after the ship lost electrical power and propulsion.

The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. local time as the vessel, which is 135 meters long and was built in 2022, was heading towards Utrecht and then on to Cologne. While navigating from the IJ toward the Amsterdam–Rhine Canal, the ship struck the underside of the Amsterdamsebrug, a bridge constructed in 1957 with a clearance of approximately 9.5 meters. Unfortunately, the ship’s Wheelhouse, designed to be raised or lowered for bridge passage, failed to lower in time, resulting in significant damage.

Following the initial impact, the vessel continued forward, causing further damage where the radar mast at the stern bent, and it eventually came to a halt after making contact with the canal wall. Passengers reported feeling a strong jolt as the ship hit the bridge.

Emergency services, including police and an ambulance, were dispatched to the scene. The helmsman received minor injuries but no passengers were hurt. After the collision, the ship remained operational for a brief period before losing electrical power, prompting authorities to evacuate everyone on board. Many passengers were awoken from sleep and instructed to gather their belongings before being escorted ashore to a nearby roadway, where buses transported them to Cologne.

Due to the damages from the collision, the A-Rosa Sena was unable to continue its voyage and was expected to be towed back to Amsterdam. The incident caused the canal to remain partially closed for a time as inspections of the bridge were conducted. The bridge was later deemed safe and reopened for road traffic.

The A-Rosa Sena’s itinerary included a journey from Amsterdam to Cologne, followed by a cruise toward Hamburg.
