Surge in Passenger and Cargo Traffic Across the Ports of Las Palmas: A Positive Outlook for Trade
The Port Authority of Las Palmas has reported significant growth in passenger and cargo traffic in early 2026, highlighting a strong start to the year. From January to February, the authority recorded 888,378 passengers, an increase of 102,614 from the same period in 2025, marking a year-on-year growth of 13.06%. Notably, cruise traffic dominated these figures, with 710,072 cruise passengers, reflecting an 18.31% rise.
February statistics further emphasized the robust performance in passenger and cruise operations, showcasing the resilience of the port system and its essential role in boosting economic activity and connectivity across the Canary Islands.
Overall, the total traffic handled reached 5,655,540 tonnes, representing a 4.67% increase year-on-year, of which cargo accounted for 5,152,884 tonnes, up by 4.25%. The Port of Las Palmas continued to be the busiest within the system, handling 4,902,414 tonnes and 503,623 passengers thus far in 2026, a rise of 16.22% over last year.
The cruise tourism sector experienced the fastest growth among passengers, increasing by 28.37%. This trend reinforces the Port of Las Palmas’s status as a significant gateway for maritime tourism in the region and an essential hub for Atlantic cruise itineraries. The diverse operations of the port authority, which encompass commercial shipping, cruise activity, and regional maritime connectivity, contribute to its positive performance in both passenger and cargo segments.
