TUI River Cruises Celebrates the Christening of TUI Aria and Unveils Two New-Build Ships

TUI River Cruises has unveiled plans for two new riverboats, announced during the christening ceremony of the TUI Aria on the River Rhine in Frankfurt. This addition marks a significant step in TUI’s strategy to expand its fleet from six vessels in 2026 to ten by 2028.

Designed for European and international river itineraries, the new vessels are set to navigate popular routes on the Rhine, the Nile, and the Douro. They are being constructed with an eye towards eco-friendly alternative fuels, including methanol, and will each feature 94 passenger cabins, accommodating up to 188 guests. The ships will offer modernized interior designs and enhanced public spaces while adhering to TUI’s established service model.

These will be the first purpose-built ships for TUI’s river cruise fleet and represent a commitment to growth in the river cruise segment, aiming to cater to the UK market’s preferences with flexible travel options. The new boats are expected to enter service in 2028, coinciding with the operational launch of TUI Aria, which is now the largest refurbished vessel in TUI’s European fleet.

The christening ceremony for TUI Aria featured traditional ship-naming festivities, including speeches from company officials and a ceremonial bottle-breaking, ushering in the vessel’s new role within the TUI fleet.

Currently, TUI River Cruises operates four adult-only riverboats in Europe—TUI Isla, TUI Skyla, TUI Maya, and TUI Aria—alongside two boats on the Nile, TUI Al Horeya and TUI Bahareya. The fleet is expected to continue expanding with the introduction of TUI Elara in 2027 and TUI Luzia on the Douro, with the two newly announced ships slated for 2028.

This expansion occurs against a backdrop of strong commercial activity within the river cruise market, as the company has seen a notable increase in booking volumes at the start of 2026, showcasing a continuing demand for river cruise experiences.
