Juneau Secures Tidelands Lease for New Cruise Dock Development

Alaska Native village corporation Huna Totem Corporation and the City and Borough of Juneau have signed a tidelands lease for the Áak’w Landing project. This agreement is a significant step toward the final design and construction of a new cruise ship dock and waterfront destination in downtown Juneau.

The lease follows approvals from both the Assembly and Planning Commission. Russell Dick, the president and CEO of Huna Totem Corporation, emphasized the project’s importance as a meaningful investment in Juneau’s future. He noted that the initiative aims to create a welcoming area that showcases local culture while providing opportunities for businesses and community events, thereby revitalizing the waterfront.

With 95 large cruise ships expected to dock in Juneau in 2026, the new facility aims to accommodate increasing berth space demands. The development will also help alleviate vehicle congestion on Marine Park and South Franklin Street, enhancing pedestrian access to downtown attractions and shops.

In addition to the dock, the Áak’w Landing project will include public spaces, dining options, retail shops, and cultural experiences, with a particular feature of the dock being its shorepower capability.
