Asian Destinations Experience Double-Digit Growth and Exciting New Port Developments

Five Asian cruise destinations highlighted their growing markets during a recent luncheon in Miami Beach, hosted by the Hong Kong Tourism Board alongside representatives from Korea, the Philippines, Xiamen, and Shanghai. The event, themed “A Journey Through Asia’s Finest Moments,” underscored significant growth prospects and new tourist experiences within the region’s cruise industry.

Marilyn Tham, general manager at the Hong Kong Tourism Board, noted that Hong Kong experienced double-digit growth in cruise passenger arrivals and ship calls last year, surpassing 20 percent. This trend is expected to continue into 2026, with more incoming calls from both Chinese and international cruise ships. To enhance the visitor experience, Hong Kong is promoting 77 Michelin-starred dining options and unique shore excursions, such as helicopter tours.

South Korea is also bracing for remarkable growth, with projections suggesting over 1.8 million cruise passengers in 2026. Lee Jong-Geun, Deputy Director of Korea’s Marine Leisure Tourism Division, explained that increased interest in K-Culture and K-Pop is significantly driving this growth. Additionally, the country has expanded its port offerings with the addition of Masan and Saemangeum.

The Philippines recorded 136 cruise ship calls in the last year, welcoming over 240,000 passengers—a 26 percent increase from the previous year. Dr. Paulo Benito S. Tugbang from the Philippines Department of Tourism mentioned that several expedition and luxury cruise lines, such as Swan Hellenic and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, are set to visit the islands more frequently.

Moreover, the Shanghai Port has upgraded its cruise services with a new customs clearance system that accelerates processing to mere seconds. Qi Xin, from the Baoshan District Party Working Committee, expressed a commitment to improving infrastructure and creating memorable experiences for cruises.

Xiamen also enhanced its customs procedure efficiency by over 50% and introduced a “One-Hour Tourism Circle,” which grants easy access to major tourist attractions. Wang Guodi from the Xiamen Municipal Bureau highlighted the city’s unique cultural offerings as a factor in its status as a distinctive international cruise port in China.
