Holland America Unveils Exciting Evolution Fleet Refurbishment Program

Holland America Line has unveiled a $500 million refurbishment initiative called the Evolution program, aimed at upgrading six vessels within its fleet. This announcement was made by President and CEO Beth Bodensteiner at an industry event held in Miami Beach. The program is notable for being the largest fleet update in the company’s 153-year history.

The refurbishment will include the brand’s four Vista-class ships, as well as the Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam. Bodensteiner explained that these vessels will receive enhancements inspired by the features of the Pinnacle-class ships, in addition to creating more staterooms and a wider choice of accommodations.

The first ship to undergo these upgrades will be the Oosterdam, expected to showcase its new features in Fall 2027. Notable additions to the ship will include the Grand Dutch Café, previously seen on newer Holland America ships, and a total of 76 new staterooms, which feature options such as 30 solo verandahs and suites with panoramic ocean views.

Details regarding the extensive refurbishment will be released in the future, with changes guided largely by guest feedback. The primary goal of this initiative is to enhance the guest experience, increase capacity, and incorporate new features while ensuring a well-balanced guest-to-space and crew ratio.

Currently, Holland America operates an 11-ship fleet, consisting of vessels constructed between 1999 and 2021. The fleet features mid-sized ships like the 61,215-ton Volendam, alongside larger vessels such as the 99,000-ton Rotterdam.

This Evolution program follows in the footsteps of AIDA Cruises’ similar initiative, which is modernizing seven Sphinx-class ships, including the AIDAbella, which was recently in dry dock for seven weeks. Carnival Corporation’s CEO Josh Weinstein previously highlighted that this ongoing modernization effort is expected to yield "outsized returns" by investing in areas that can drive significant revenue increases.
