6 Surprising Discoveries from My First Solo Cruise Experience

I recently completed my first solo cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, and it was an experience full of unexpected moments. My journey took me to stunning destinations including Roatán, Honduras; Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; and Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas. As someone who’s explored solo via plane and train, I was curious to experience cruising on my own.

One of the first surprises came when I booked the cruise. The cost of a room for one person was higher than for two, surprising me as most cruise cabins are designed for at least two guests. While some ships offer solo cabins, mine didn’t, resulting in a "single supplement" charge. I ended up paying $2,000 for an ocean-view stateroom, a price that would have been significantly lower if shared with another traveler.

Meeting people on the ship turned out to be easier than anticipated. Despite my tendency to be shy, I found plenty of opportunities for conversation with other guests. Families, couples, and fellow solo travelers were all open to chatting around the pool, in dining areas, and other communal spaces, which made connecting over our shared getaway quite natural.

Navigating excursion groups was another area where I expected difficulty but found it manageable. Since I booked all my excursions through the cruise line, clear signs and directions made finding my group straightforward. Contrary to my expectations, I wasn’t alone; many fellow passengers were also looking to forge new connections during these group activities. I made friends while embarking on various excursions, especially during a guided hike in Roatán, where I interacted with other travelers, including another solo cruiser.

However, I encountered an unexpected issue: many cruise staff mistook me for a child and frequently asked, "Where are your parents?" This happened almost daily, likely due to my youthful appearance. It made me realize that solo cruising may be less common for someone in their mid-20s.

Despite embarking on a ship the size of Wonder of the Seas, finding a lounge chair on the pool deck proved challenging as the day progressed. I assumed space would be plentiful, but by noon, most chairs were occupied. As the rules against saving seats with towels weren’t enforced, securing a good spot required arriving early.

Reflecting on my trip, while I had a wonderful time, I often felt lonely amidst the ship’s vibrant social scene. Surrounded by families and groups, I found myself wishing for someone to share experiences and conversations with. If I decide to cruise again, I’ll likely bring a friend to enhance the experience.
