Milwaukee Welcomes the First Cruise Ship of the Season!

The Viking Polaris has arrived in Milwaukee, marking the start of what is expected to be a record-breaking cruise season at the city’s Port Milwaukee. This season is projected to host 64 cruise vessel calls and over 80 itineraries from late April until October, including 32 turnaround visits and 11 Milwaukee round-trip itineraries. Port officials anticipate approximately 20,000 global passenger visits this year, a significant increase compared to last year’s total of 11,255 passengers.

The local economy benefitted greatly from the cruise traffic in the previous season, generating $2.5 million, and officials expect this figure to rise to over $3.5 million in 2026. Alderwoman and Harbor Commissioner Andrea Pratt emphasized the importance of cruise traffic, noting it stimulates local businesses as visitors explore the city, dine in restaurants, and shop in local stores.

To attract more cruise traffic, Port Milwaukee has made strategic investments and developed strong partnerships globally. The introduction of American Cruise Lines, which will provide domestic cruises in the Great Lakes, adds to the anticipated growth for the season. American Cruise Lines plans to make eight turnaround visits with the launch of their new itineraries to Milwaukee.

Additionally, Milwaukee is set to open a new cruise dock, enhancing its appeal as a cruise destination. The South Shore dock, which will accommodate larger vessels, represents a significant investment in the city’s future as a hub for cruise traffic. This new infrastructure, combined with the existing dock at Pier Wisconsin, positions Milwaukee competitively within the Great Lakes cruise market.
