Illinois Health Officials Probe Possible Hantavirus Case in Winnebago County, Distinguishing It from Cruise Ship Outbreak

The Illinois Department of Public Health is investigating a potential case of hantavirus in a resident of Winnebago County. This case is not associated with a recent outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship, where three individuals died, and others fell ill. After returning from the cruise, 17 American passengers are currently being monitored and quarantined in Nebraska.

Officials emphasized that the Winnebago County patient had not traveled internationally nor had any contact with the cruise ship passengers. It is believed that the resident may have contracted the virus from a home infested with rodent droppings, potentially indicating the North American strain of hantavirus, which is not transmissible between humans. In contrast, the strain associated with the cruise ship incident is the Andes strain, spread by a rodent species not found in the United States.

The Illinois health officials reassured the public that the risk of contracting hantavirus remains very low and are collaborating with the Winnebago County Health Department and the CDC for further monitoring and verification. The results from additional testing are expected to take up to 10 days.
