MSC Cruises Achieves Verified Methane Emissions Certification Under FuelEU Maritime

MSC Cruises has made a significant advancement in maritime environmental standards by becoming the first cruise line to receive independent verification and Flag State recognition for methane emissions from its LNG-powered ships under the FuelEU Maritime framework. This achievement is particularly relevant for operators of LNG-fuelled vessels as European emissions reporting requirements become stricter.

The certification applies to two of MSC’s ships: the MSC World Europa and MSC Euribia. It was granted by Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore after an assessment aligning with the IMO Resolution MEPC.402(83).

During the verification process, traditional default assumptions surrounding methane emissions were replaced with actual performance data gathered from the ships. The results indicated that World Europa had a methane slip value of 1.67%, while Euribia recorded a value of 1.48%, both below the regulatory threshold of 3.1%.

The assessment included onboard measurements of exhaust gases and thorough reviews of specific emission documentation. Bureau Veritas also evaluated the vessels’ compliance plans with the EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime requirements before issuing Statements of Compliance.

Michele Francioni, MSC’s Chief Energy Transition Officer, emphasized that this certification marks a vital progression in accurately measuring and reporting methane emissions, enhancing the credibility of FuelEU Maritime data. This independent verification could also impact compliance strategies for both the cruise and cargo industries as they navigate regulatory landscapes increasingly focused on greenhouse gas emissions.

In the broader context, Paillette Palaiologou from Bureau Veritas noted that utilizing verified emissions data may lead to better operational strategies and confidence in vessel efficiency, aiding the maritime industry in reaching net-zero emission targets.

MSC Cruises is committed to exploring alternative fuels and innovative technologies as part of its ongoing energy transition program.
