A cruise ship successfully rescued a Canadian sailor stranded approximately 500 miles off the Oregon coast on May 26, as reported by the U.S. Coast Guard. The 74-year-old man was en route from Hawaii to British Columbia when he encountered severe gale-force winds and towering 30-foot waves, leading to the failure of his boat’s engine and the breaking of its mast, which resulted in a shoulder injury.
Despite the challenging conditions, the mariner was well-prepared, bringing along provisions including food, water, a life raft, and a life jacket. His proactive use of a handheld satellite communicator allowed him to reach out to the U.S. Coast Guard’s Northwest District, which aided in tracking his location.
The man was ultimately located 489 miles off the coast of Tillamook. A Coast Guard C-27J cargo plane was deployed from Sacramento to oversee the rescue operation due to the distance from shore, assessing sea conditions and the damage to the vessel while carrying additional supplies for survival until the rescue could be enacted.
Coast Guard personnel then coordinated with the cruise ship Silver Whisper, which adjusted its course by 120 miles to assist in the rescue. This partnership was made possible through the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue system, a global network that helps locate commercial ships involved in rescue operations.
Scott Giard, the Coast Guard’s Northwest District Search and Rescue Program Manager, praised the sailor’s experience and foresight in carrying a satellite communicator, which proved crucial in avoiding a more tragic outcome.
