A norovirus outbreak has been reported on the Ruby Princess cruise ship, which is currently docked in San Francisco. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that 102 of the over 3,000 passengers aboard and 23 crew members have been affected. Symptoms for those infected include diarrhea and vomiting.
The Ruby Princess embarked on a 20-day voyage that began on June 12 and was scheduled to conclude shortly after the outbreak was reported on Saturday. Passengers and crew were notified of the situation, and Princess Cruises stated that they responded swiftly by implementing enhanced sanitation procedures on the ship.
In light of the outbreak, the CDC has advised several actions that Princess Cruises and the crew have undertaken, including:
- Increased cleaning and disinfection measures.
- Collection of stool specimens from those experiencing gastrointestinal illness for testing.
- Isolation of sick passengers and crew members.
- Consultation with the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program to ensure proper sanitation and reporting.
The ship arrived in San Francisco on Thursday morning, docking at Pier 27. Princess Cruises noted that a comprehensive cleaning and disinfection process would be carried out to address the outbreak.
