Port of Québec to Enhance Sustainability with 16MW Shore Power Connection by 2028

The Port of Québec is set to implement a significant 16-megawatt shore power initiative at Berth 30 by 2028, intended to facilitate lower-emission operations along the Saint Lawrence River. This innovative system will allow compatible cruise ships to connect directly to Québec’s hydroelectric grid while docked, drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 90%. The project is projected to prevent around 70,000 tons of greenhouse gases over its operational lifespan.

Marie-Andrée Blanchet, the director of cruise and international development at the Port of Québec, emphasized the necessity of such infrastructure for future ports, responding to the demands of cruise line partners seeking reliable, sustainable solutions. She reiterated the Port’s commitment to collaborating with local communities and supporting sustainable cruise tourism.

This shore power project is part of a larger investment of nearly $70 million aimed at enhancing Berth 30 and the overall cruise infrastructure in the area. Bud Darr, President and CEO of Cruise Lines International Association, acknowledged the importance of such investments in aiding the cruise industry to meet its emissions reduction targets. He noted that Québec’s commitment to hydroelectric-sourced shore power is vital for the broader appeal of the Saint Lawrence and surrounding regions for cruise lines interested in environmentally responsible operations.

Shore power initiatives are already in place in adjacent locations, like Montréal and New York, with future plans for Boston and Charlottetown set to include similar capabilities.
