Italy’s Port of Naples achieved a significant milestone with the first LNG (liquefied natural gas) ship-to-ship bunkering operation for the Sun Princess. This successful operation was the result of collaboration between Axpo, Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV), and Studio di Ingegneria Benvenuto & Associati.
The bunkering process was facilitated by the Green Zeebrugge, a specialized vessel managed by Axpo. Simone Rodolfi, who oversees origination and structured products at Axpo, highlighted that this operation exemplifies their commitment to sustainable shipping practices. He noted that by combining Axpo’s bunkering experience with the engineering capabilities of Studio Benvenuto and Bureau Veritas’s technical verification expertise, they are establishing vital infrastructure to support a low emissions model for Italy’s cruise industry.
Bureau Veritas conducted a technical review of the Quantitative Risk Assessment from Studio Benvenuto to ensure compliance with Italian maritime regulations. Alberto Moroncelli, BV’s marine and offshore director for Italy and Monaco, emphasized the importance of technical assurance in facilitating innovative LNG bunkering operations within the industry, thereby propelling the maritime sector towards lower-carbon practices.
Currently, the Sun Princess is actively sailing Western Mediterranean itineraries, with its season scheduled from April through October 2026.
