Meet the New Robot Making Waves Underneath Carnival Cruise Ships!

Carnival Cruise Line is advancing its sustainability initiatives by introducing a new hull-cleaning technology called the HullSkater, developed by Norwegian company Jotun. This innovative remotely operated vehicle will initially be used on the Carnival Pride, facilitating the inspection and cleaning of a ship’s hull underwater.

Regular maintenance of cruise ship hulls is crucial, as rust and marine growth can accumulate, impacting efficiency and safety. Traditionally, this cleaning process requires a ship to enter dry dock, which is labor-intensive and time-consuming. With the HullSkater, hull cleaning can now be performed more frequently while the ship is docked, helping to minimize the buildup of marine life.

The system employs cameras and sensors to navigate the ship’s hull, assess its condition, and perform necessary cleaning tasks. This proactive upkeep is expected to enhance operational efficiency. Jari Oinas, the AVP of fuel performance and decarbonization at Carnival, emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean hull for effective ship operations.

The potential benefits extend to fuel efficiency as well, with marine growth capable of increasing propulsion power demand by 25-30%. As propulsion systems account for a significant portion of a vessel’s energy consumption, improving hull maintenance is likely to lead to substantial reductions in fuel usage.

Carnival Cruise Line has been making strides toward sustainability, including the adoption of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) power for future ships, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The introduction of the HullSkater represents an important step in realizing this goal, aligning with the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.
