Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has made history by becoming the first cruise line to officially sign the Merchant Navy Welfare Board’s Seafarer Pledge, reinforcing its dedication to the welfare, professional growth, and long-term recruitment of maritime staff.
This pledge, inspired by the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant, aims to acknowledge the vital role of seafarers while urging organizations within the maritime sector to enhance opportunities, welfare, and career paths for personnel at sea.
By signing the pledge, Fred. Olsen has committed to implementing concrete measures that support career advancement, facilitate transitions between shipboard and land-based jobs, recognize maritime qualifications and experience, and promote awareness of maritime career options. This initiative complements its existing welfare and training programs. Currently, Fred. Olsen operates three ocean-going vessels: Bolette, Borealis, and Balmoral. The line has previously enhanced its welfare efforts through its membership in the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network, providing crews with access to private, multilingual support.
Fred. Olsen also emphasizes internal career growth, featuring many senior officers who have risen through the ranks. Notably, Captain Rommel Pineda started as a deck boy in 1996, while Captain Paolo Togonon advanced to the position of Master with over 15 years in the company.
To further bolster crew support, Fred. Olsen created a Crew Welfare Officer role to manage welfare programs across its fleet. The company has consistently provided educational avenues for young individuals interested in maritime careers. Collaboration with the Maritime Skills Academy for officer training and supporting cadet placements on its ships showcases its commitment to professional development.
Leanna Lakes, Fred. Olsen’s Technical and Marine Operations Director, stated that the pledge formalizes the company’s ongoing efforts to support its workforce and recognize the contributions of seafarers to both the business and the broader maritime sector. The company plans to leverage its status as a pledge signatory to enhance welfare, developmental, and career opportunities while promoting higher standards throughout the industry.
The Merchant Navy Welfare Board has seen over 80 organizations join the pledge, aiming to establish clearer expectations for companies assisting seafarers. The board underscores the importance of collaboration among employers, maritime organizations, and welfare bodies to improve conditions and ensure adequate support and recognition for those working at sea.
The Seafarer Pledge is co-funded by the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, Trinity House, and the Merchant Navy Association, reflecting a collective effort within the UK maritime sector to enhance seafarer welfare, skill development, and recruit future maritime professionals. Fred. Olsen’s current welfare programs, including ISWAN membership and dedicated support services for its crew members, are part of this larger commitment.
