The Glacier Getaway Terminal in Whittier, Alaska, has been declared a total loss due to severe damage from a dock fire reported earlier this week. According to a report by Anchorage Daily News, the Alaska State Fire Marshal’s Office confirmed that the fire, which started around 11 a.m. on Monday, continued to burn until about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The terminal, financed by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) in collaboration with the Huna Totem Corporation, opened to guests in late 2024 and was built for $80 million. Huna Totem has begun assessing the extent of the damage but has not provided specific information about the facility’s overall condition. Future operations and repairs will be determined after this assessment is complete.
The affected dock, which is 500 feet long, is part of a larger terminal that includes a two-berth pier. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although operations were interrupted, and a high-speed catamaran was damaged during the incident. The Norwegian Jade, which was in port at the time, successfully departed and avoided any fire damage.
The Glacier Getaway Terminal was designed to serve as a new turn-port destination for cruise liners in Southcentral Alaska, accommodating vessels from NCLH’s brands, including Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Both the Norwegian Jade and the Seven Seas Explorer are scheduled to visit the port later this year, with additional calls planned for 2027.
