MSC Cruises is exploring the possibility of acquiring the approximately 80 percent stake in Meyer Werft that is currently owned by the German federal government, as reported by Bloomberg News. The negotiations are ongoing, and there is no certainty that a deal will be finalized, as other bidders may still emerge in the process.
This potential acquisition follows an earlier agreement made in 2025 between MSC and Meyer Werft for new ship construction, which has not yet been concluded. Meyer Werft’s representatives have not provided an update on this situation. According to sources from Bloomberg, discussions are still in the air, and the government is not prepared to incur a loss on the €400 million ($459 million) that was infused into the shipyard to support it during financially challenging times stemming from the pandemic.
In 2024, the German government stepped in to assist Meyer Werft with significant financial support, including a €400 million equity investment and €2.6 billion in credit guarantees, amid concerns from banks regarding the yard’s financial stability.
If MSC manages to secure ownership of the shipyard, it would mark a significant strategic shift, providing the cruise line with direct influence over shipbuilding capacity for its future fleet expansions and potentially limiting access for competitors.
