Captain Francesco La Farina, a renowned figure in the Carnival Cruise Line, has passed away due to cancer after dedicating an impressive 27 years to the company. His passing was publicly confirmed by Carnival on September 28, describing him as a beloved and respected leader among his colleagues.
La Farina, who joined the company in April 1999, was known for commanding several ships, including Carnival Freedom and Carnival Magic. He was affectionately nicknamed "Ciccio" by his peers and was remembered for his steady leadership, professionalism, and humility.
He fought bravely against cancer until the very end, surrounded by his family who were able to say their goodbyes. A friend of La Farina, Jorge Solano, commemorated his legacy in a Facebook post, noting that he had taken his "final voyage to heaven" and had battled valiantly against his illness.
Colleagues spoke fondly of La Farina, noting his humble nature and deep respect for others. A former co-worker, Trevor Nugent, recalled his experience working alongside La Farina as he rose through the ranks, and noted how much he would be missed.
In addition to being noted for his strong leadership during emergencies—like when a severe wind event caused Carnival Magic to hit a pier—La Farina was loved by guests for his approachable demeanor. Many guests recalled him enjoying interactions throughout the ship, reflecting his passion for his role as captain.
Captain La Farina’s dedication to the Carnival Cruise Line and its guests has left a lasting impact on the cruise community, and his memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
