Plug Power Achieves Green Milestone by Powering Five Cruise Ships Simultaneously

Plug, a company specializing in maritime charging and shore power, announced a major achievement on August 14 by connecting five cruise ships to its shore power systems at the same time.

This event took place at the Norwegian ports of Bergen and Aalesund, highlighting a significant advance in efforts to cut emissions in the maritime sector, according to the company.

In Bergen, the ships AIDAperla, Viking Neptune, and Amadea were all connected to Plug’s shore power facilities.

At the same time, in Aalesund, the ships AIDAprima and MSC Euribia were powered by similar setups.

At the height of docking activity, Plug supplied nearly 26,000 kW of clean energy, significantly reducing the reliance on fossil fuels.

The shore power facilities in Bergen and Aalesund, with a combined capacity of 80 MVA, are capable of servicing up to five cruise vessels simultaneously. By 2024, Plug expects to distribute over 25 million kWh of clean energy through these installations.

The ships used about 160 MWh of clean energy during their docking period, preventing the release of approximately 128 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
