Hurricane Milton Causes Delay for Sun Princess’s Arrival in Florida

The Sun Princess is set to arrive at its new homeport in Port Everglades later than previously planned due to the impact of Hurricane Milton.

A message sent to guests onboard revealed that the ship is now projected to reach Florida two days later than expected, arriving on Oct. 11, 2024.

“In light of the storm, the U.S. Coast Guard has imposed restrictions on ship access to all South Florida ports,” stated Princess Cruises.

“Although the Coast Guard has not provided a definitive reopening date, we are aiming to return to Fort Lauderdale on Friday, contingent on clearance,” the company added.

Concluding a 16-night trans-Atlantic crossing, the Sun Princess was initially set to dock at the port on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024.

Due to the closure of the port, the LNG-powered vessel will remain securely at sea, moving away from the storm, according to Princess.

“During this time, we will closely observe the storm’s trajectory to ensure that we stay clear of any hazardous weather, placing your safety and comfort at the forefront,” the company explained.

To assist guests with their post-cruise travel plans, Princess will be offering complimentary internet access to all guests onboard.

“This will help you stay connected, gather travel information, and make any necessary adjustments to your travel arrangements,” the company informed passengers.

“We sincerely appreciate your patience, understanding, and flexibility as we work through this situation. Our team is dedicated to ensuring your safety and providing a positive experience during this extended period at sea,” Princess stated.

Having departed from Southampton in late September, the new Sun Princess is currently providing a trans-Atlantic journey to Fort Lauderdale.

The original schedule for the 16-night cruise featured stops at destinations in England, Spain, and Portugal, including Portland, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Funchal.

Constructed by the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, the ship accommodating 4,300 guests commenced service for Princess Cruises in February.

After an inaugural season in the Mediterranean, the vessel is scheduled for a winter season in the Caribbean.
