Scenic Eclipse Docks for Azipod Replacement: What You Need to Know

Scenic Cruises has provided an update indicating that the Scenic Eclipse is currently undergoing drydock work in Galveston, Texas, where a new Azipod propulsion unit is being installed.

The new unit is set to replace the existing one, which is currently non-operational, as stated by the company in a social media update.

Scenic is collaborating closely with its partner, ABB Group, to ensure that the installation is completed ahead of the ship’s upcoming cruise schedule.

According to the company, the replacement Azipod is being transported to Texas using a specially chartered Antonov 124 aircraft, acknowledged as one of the largest cargo planes globally.

On-site to oversee the project are Captain James Griffiths, Scenic Group’s general manager of ocean operations; Jason Flesher, director of discovery operations; and Darko Caput, director of marine & technical operations, ensuring that all necessary work is completed and that the Scenic Eclipse receives certification for full operations.

The vessel, which was launched in 2019, is expected to recommence guest services on November 27, 2024, beginning a winter schedule featuring expeditions to Antarctica and South America.

“We’re eager to welcome our guests aboard to create unforgettable memories in the white continent,” remarked Scenic.

In September, the company canceled three cruises onboard the Scenic Eclipse due to complications with one of the ABBA Azipod propulsion systems.

Scenic indicated that the issue was impacting the vessel’s propulsion capacity of the 228-guest ship, requiring it to travel at reduced speeds.

While the ship remained safe for sailing, it was deemed necessary to secure dry dock space for critical maintenance tasks.

The affected voyages were meant to travel to the Caribbean and South America between October 24, 2024, and November 27, 2024.

Constructed at the Uljanik Shipyard in Croatia, the Scenic Eclipse began its service with Scenic Cruises in mid-2019.

The 16,500-ton ship was later joined by its sister vessel, the Scenic Eclipse II, which launched in April 2023.
