Cruise passengers in the Western Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico this week are anxiously monitoring Tropical Storm Rafael, which is expected to be classified as a hurricane soon. However, it’s not just in the Caribbean where inclement weather affects cruise schedules.

This time of year, the North Sea’s weather can also be unpredictable, featuring strong winds, heavy waves, and hazardous conditions. As a result, Ambassador Cruise Line’s Ambition had to cancel one of its port stops on the current voyage, meaning guests missed their chance to visit Kristiansand, Norway.

The vessel is presently on an 11-night journey titled “Treasures of Norway and Denmark,” which began its voyage from Newcastle Upon Tyne in the UK on Sunday, October 27, 2024.

Sadly, as the ship journeyed along the scenic coast of southern Norway, inclement weather posed significant challenges for safe docking.

“Regrettably, based on the weather forecast for Ambition’s scheduled visit to Kristiansand tomorrow, we anticipate strong winds reaching up to 40 knots and sea swells of about 2 meters,” the cruise line indicated.

“Due to the unavailability of tugboats at the port and recommendations from the harbour master and pilot, these conditions surpass the safety standards necessary for the ship to dock. Consequently, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our stop at Kristiansand, and since there are no viable alternatives, Ambition will remain at sea.”

The 48,123-gross-ton vessel, previously known as AIDAmira from AIDA Cruises, was intended to make a port call at the Norwegian city on Friday, November 1. While that day turned into an afternoon at sea, the ship proceeded towards Oslo for a scheduled visit on Saturday, November 2.

Kristiansand, located in southern Norway, is positioned 250 kilometers (155 miles) southwest of Oslo. This port city, situated along the North Sea coast, can experience extreme weather conditions. In contrast, the capital of Norway, nestled in the Oslofjord, enjoys a much more sheltered environment.

The journey includes an overnight stop in Copenhagen, from noon on Monday, November 4 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, marking the last destination of the cruise. This extended stay in such a lively city will provide guests aboard Ambition with ample opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich history and culture of Denmark’s capital.

Following the Copenhagen visit, Ambition will head back to Newcastle Upon Tyne for the debarkation scheduled on Thursday, November 7.

It is important to highlight that sudden port cancellations are never the intention of a cruise line. Guests were informed about the missed port only the day prior, after it became evident that docking was not feasible.

“We deeply regret any disappointment and inconvenience brought about by this change, but ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew is our foremost priority,” the cruise line stated.

Every cruise line places the safety of their guests, crew, ships, and ports of call at the forefront when adjusting itineraries and operations due to weather-related factors.

Throughout the Atlantic Hurricane Season, which lasts until November 30, those traveling by cruise are particularly attentive to tropical storms and hurricanes.

For instance, several ships have already modified their itinerary plans in response to what is currently Tropical Storm Rafael, anticipated to strengthen into Hurricane Rafael within the next 48 hours.

Severe weather can affect ships anywhere around the globe at any season. Recently, significant flooding in Valencia, Spain resulted in port cancellations due to unpredictable and hazardous conditions.

Especially in late autumn, cancellations are frequent in Alaska, often leading to ships missing their last opportunity to visit popular Alaskan destinations like Sitka, Skagway, or Juneau.

While it can be disappointing for travelers to lose a port of call, particularly during a bucket-list journey or a rare ocean voyage, safety always remains a priority.

Cruise lines may seek an alternative port as a substitute or try to modify the itinerary to reach the same port once the weather improves. However, this isn’t always achievable, and guests might end up enjoying a day at sea instead.

Travelers should be aware that compensation for a missed port of call due to safety concerns is not something to expect. Occasionally, cruise lines may provide onboard credits as well as refunds for port fees and taxes for the affected stops. This is more likely to occur when several ports are cancelled and there is a significant change to the itinerary.

It is important to note that most cruise lines operate under ticket contracts that explicitly state no compensation is owed for changes related to weather conditions.
