Cherbourg, France Set to Implement Onshore Power Supply Technology by Early 2027

Cherbourg, France, is moving toward more sustainable maritime practices with plans to implement Onshore Power Supply (OPS) technology by early 2027. This initiative is part of a EUR 11.5 million project jointly funded by Ports of Normandy and the Cotentin Urban Community. It aims to allow ships to connect to shore power, significantly reducing emissions during dock time.

The OPS installation will cover an area of 800 square meters and will be equipped with a cable management system that includes four connection sockets. Initial work on the project is expected to start in autumn 2025, with the completion anticipated in early 2027.

Julien Bougon, deputy director of the Cotentin Tourist Office, emphasized that this project represents a crucial step forward in reducing CO2 emissions in Cherbourg and supports broader sustainability goals.

In addition to the OPS initiative, Cherbourg has introduced several enhancements to improve its cruise infrastructure:

  • A new dedicated bus line utilizing next-generation vehicles for cruise shuttle services.
  • Renovations to parking facilities at the cruise terminal.
  • A revamped reception area featuring a new concept store.
  • A "Cruise-Friendly" membership program aimed at elevating the welcome experience for cruise visitors.
