Cherbourg, France Set to Implement Onshore Power Supply Technology by Early 2027

Cherbourg, France, is poised to implement Onshore Power Supply (OPS) technology by early 2027, a move that underscores its commitment to sustainable maritime practices. The €11.5 million initiative, co-funded by the Ports of Normandy and the Cotentin Urban Community, aims to create shore-to-ship power connections, allowing vessels to significantly lower emissions while they are docked.

The OPS area will span 800 square meters and feature a cable management system along with four connection sockets. Installation work is scheduled to begin in autumn 2025, with the project expected to be completed by early 2027.

Julien Bougon, deputy director of the Cotentin Tourist Office, highlighted that this initiative is a crucial step toward reducing CO2 emissions in Cherbourg and is part of broader objectives geared towards sustainability.

In addition to OPS, Cherbourg has undertaken various upgrades to enhance its cruise infrastructure, including:

  • Launching new cruise shuttle services with next-generation vehicles.
  • Renovating terminal parking facilities.
  • Modernizing the reception area with a new concept store.
  • Implementing a "Cruise-Friendly" membership program to improve the experience for cruise passengers visiting the port.
