Quantum of the Seas: Royal Caribbean’s Ship Conducts Four Medevac Missions Off New Caledonia
New Caledonia’s maritime rescue services conducted four medical evacuations from Royal Caribbean’s ship, Quantum of the Seas, within a 24-hour span, an unusual series of events for this region. The incidents took place as the cruise was en route between Vanuatu and Brisbane, Queensland, during a seven-night journey that began on February 28.
The first evacuation occurred on March 5, coordinated by the New Caledonia Operational Surveillance and Rescue Center (COSS-NC), after a telemedical consultation revealed a passenger needed immediate hospitalization. The ship changed its course to Noumea, where two Australian nationals were evacuated just past midnight.
As Quantum of the Seas continued its cruise, two additional and unrelated medical emergencies were reported on March 6. This led to the evacuation of two New Zealand nationals by local rescue teams. Each patient was stabilized aboard the ship before being transferred to medical facilities on shore.
Previously, on February 18, three Australian passengers were similarly evacuated from Quantum of the Seas, highlighting the challenges of managing medical emergencies in remote maritime areas. New Caledonian authorities stressed the importance of adhering to established protocols for passenger safety. The ship successfully completed its voyage, returning to Brisbane as planned on March 7, with no further disruptions to its itinerary.
