Ibiza Joins Mallorca in Limiting Cruise Ship Dockings to Just Two Per Day
Ibiza (Balearic Spain) is poised to enforce stricter controls on the number of cruise ships arriving at the island as a measure to tackle “tourist massification.”
Although cruise passengers contribute economically, the local council aims to restrict the number of ships docking simultaneously. The forthcoming policy will allow only two cruise ships to berth concurrently.
This initiative mirrors actions taken by Mallorca, which was the first Spanish location to set a cap on cruise ships, limiting them to two per day in Palma.
Vicent Mari, the president of Ibiza, underscored the necessity of collaborating closely with the Port Authority to regulate cruise traffic and avoid overcrowding in Ibiza Town. Mari pointed out that the presence of more than two cruise ships at once strains port facilities and transport systems, causing considerable disruption.
The new rules will enhance coordination with the Port Authority to ensure that no more than two ships dock at Ibiza’s port simultaneously.
“We are not opposed to the arrival of cruise ships, but we advocate for it to be more regulated and organized.”
“The current lack of organization impacts the local residents, who endure the congestion during arrivals, and the tourists, who leave with a negative impression of their visit,” Mari further stated.
