Severe Flooding Paralyses Cruise Operations in Valencia: What Travelers Need to Know
A powerful storm struck Valencia on October 30, significantly impacting cruise activities at the port in this Spanish town.
The MSC Seaside, offering cruises in the Western Mediterranean, was the first vessel to arrive in Valencia following the catastrophic flooding caused by the severe weather.
A communication directed to guests onboard indicated that the ship’s team opted to proceed with the planned call at the port to facilitate both disembarkation and embarkation for travelers.
The company mentioned the damage to the city’s infrastructure and the absence of reliable transportation, advising that transit passengers should refrain from going ashore.
“Last night, the region faced a devastating storm resulting in extensive flooding and sadly leading to numerous fatalities, with many individuals still unaccounted for,” stated MSC, as per the message from Seaside’s Master, Danilo Cha.
The company added, “For those disembarking, please be aware that Valencia Airport is currently closed, and there is no indication of when it will reopen. The high-speed train service to Madrid is also non-operational at this time, and other public transport might be limited.”
“In light of these extraordinary circumstances, we strongly advise transit guests to remain on board and enjoy the amenities of MSC Seaside, as the city has suffered extensive damage from the flood, resulting in significant disruption to infrastructure and services,” MSC stated further.
The statement noted that all planned shore excursions at the port have been cancelled due to road closures and the general lack of available transportation options.
Passengers affected will receive a complete refund for their tour fees as onboard credit, as explained in the announcement.
MSC also warned passengers considering independent excursions that there would be no transportation services connecting the ship to the city.
“Our thoughts are with the residents of Valencia as they start their recovery efforts in the wake of this disaster,” the company added.
Over the next week, Valencia is scheduled to welcome nine cruise ships, including the Celebrity Equinox, the Costa Pacifica, and the Oosterdam on November 1, 2024.
Additionally, the Explorer of the Seas, the Explora II, the Borealis, the Marella Explorer, the Wind Surf, and the Odyssey of the Seas are all expected to visit the Spanish town before November 7, 2024.
