Puerto Plata Readies for 2025 Cruise Tourism Boom in the Dominican Republic

Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic is gearing up for a bustling cruise season in 2025, with 81 ships scheduled to visit its primary ports: Amber Cove and Taino Bay. January will see Amber Cove welcoming 27 vessels, while Taino Bay prepares for 54 arrivals, bringing thousands of passengers eager to explore the area’s stunning landscapes and vibrant culture.

Carlos Atahualpa Paulino, the Regional Director of the Ministry of Tourism, stressed the economic significance of the cruise industry, underscoring how these ships bolster Puerto Plata’s reputation as a key tourism destination and stimulate economic growth.

Since its opening in 2015, Amber Cove has been instrumental in driving cruise tourism in northern Dominican Republic. The recent addition of Taino Bay in 2021 has further enhanced the region’s ability to host cruise visitors.

In 2024, the Dominican Republic welcomed over 11 million tourists, significantly contributing around $26 billion to the national GDP and creating nearly 949,000 jobs. With an emphasis on sustainable tourism practices, Puerto Plata is set to remain a vital component of the country’s broader economic and tourism initiatives.
