Puerto Plata Gears Up for a Boom in Cruise Tourism by 2025

Puerto Plata, located in the Dominican Republic, is gearing up for a bustling cruise season in 2025, with a total of 81 ships scheduled to dock at its two main ports, Amber Cove and Taino Bay. In January alone, Amber Cove is set to receive 27 vessels, while Taino Bay will welcome 54, bringing in thousands of passengers eager to explore the area’s stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage.

Carlos Atahualpa Paulino, Regional Director of the Ministry of Tourism, expressed the significance of cruise tourism, pointing out its crucial role in enhancing Puerto Plata’s status as a prime destination for travelers and as a key player in the local economy.

Amber Cove has been a significant player in the Dominican Republic’s cruise tourism since its opening in 2015. The establishment of Taino Bay in 2021 further bolstered the region’s appeal, increasing its capacity to host cruise guests.

The Dominican Republic welcomed over 11 million tourists in 2024, contributing approximately $26 billion to the nation’s GDP and supporting nearly 949,000 jobs. As Puerto Plata continues to develop and adopt sustainable tourism practices, it remains a vital part of the country’s overall tourism strategy.
