Costa Smeralda Successfully Completes LNG Bunkering in Dubai
Costa Smeralda, a ship from Costa Cruises, has successfully completed liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering at Dubai Port. The operation was carried out by the LNG tanker Green Zeebrugge, which refueled the ship’s three cryogenic tanks with 3000 m³ of LNG. This fuel will power the vessel’s engines for approximately 2.5 weeks.
The LNG bunkering is a significant milestone for Costa Cruises and marks the introduction of LNG technology to Dubai’s maritime infrastructure. This effort is a collaboration between logistics provider Monjasa and the Dubai Port Authority, highlighting Costa’s ongoing commitment to sustainable cruising through cleaner energy solutions.
Costa Smeralda reached Dubai on December 21, following its relocation voyage around Africa. After its winter season in Dubai, the ship is set to start a 37-day itinerary on March 1, which will take it to Europe and the Mediterranean, visiting various ports including Oman, Mauritius, South Africa, and Morocco, before arriving in Genoa on April 7.
This initiative reaffirms Costa’s dedication to advancing environmentally responsible practices within the cruise industry and sets a benchmark for future sustainable operations in the region.
