Portsmouth UK Unveils Record-Breaking Cruise Schedule for 2025

Portsmouth International Port has announced a record-breaking cruise schedule for 2025, with an impressive 94 cruise ships expected to visit throughout the year, setting a new high for the port.

Sustainability is a key initiative for the port, which will introduce the UK’s first shore power system to provide clean energy to multiple vessels simultaneously. This aligns with the port’s goal of achieving emissions-free operations by 2050.

Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council, highlighted the port’s essential role in the city’s infrastructure and its contribution of GBP 9.2 million in profit to support council services. His enthusiasm for the burgeoning cruise operations reflects the positive impact on local tourism and Portsmouth’s growing reputation in the global cruise market. The shore power system is viewed as a significant step towards enhancing sustainability in the UK port industry.

Each cruise call can potentially generate up to GBP 1.5 million for the city through passenger spending and berthing fees. As a local authority-owned facility, the port’s profits will be reinvested into council services, promoting collaboration among the port, businesses, and stakeholders to boost local tourism and enhance spending across various attractions in Portsmouth.

Andrew Williamson, head of cruise and ferry operations at Portsmouth International Port, noted the previous year’s successes, including the opening of a new terminal that welcomed over 168,000 cruise passengers. The port was awarded Best Port at the Wave Awards for the second year in a row and looks forward to an even busier 2025.

The upcoming schedule will include both returning favorites and maiden calls. Regular cruises from Fred Olsen and Saga Cruises will bookend the season, starting with Fred Olsen’s Borealis on January 4th, heading to the Caribbean. Notable maiden visits will feature Silverseas, Swan Hellenic, and Crystal Cruises. Ritz Carlton’s superyacht Ilma is also set for her first British Isles voyage from Portsmouth in July.

Moreover, Viking Ocean’s latest vessel, Viking Vela, will make its inaugural visit to Portsmouth on January 9th, following its initial voyage in December 2024. Returning this year are Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady, which will make multiple appearances during the summer months, further cementing the port’s partnership with the brand.
