Brisbane Cruise Terminal Celebrates Milestone with 2 Million Passengers Served
The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal (BICT) in Queensland, Australia, has reached a significant milestone, welcoming over 2 million passengers since its opening just two and a half years ago. This achievement was celebrated on January 18, 2025, with the arrival of the P&O Australia ship, Pacific Encounter.
This visit could mark the ship’s last under the Pacific Encounter name as Carnival Corporation plans to rebrand it to Carnival Encounter in preparation for phasing out the P&O Australia brand by mid-March 2025. Peter Little, Carnival Corporation’s Country Manager, praised the partnership with BICT, highlighting its crucial role in boosting Queensland’s cruise tourism. Little emphasized that the rebranding aligns with Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet expansion plans and ensures ongoing year-round cruising from Brisbane.
The terminal, which opened in June 2022 after experiencing delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, plays a vital role in the local economy. Before its construction, larger vessels were unable to dock at the city’s ports, often leading cruise operators to avoid Brisbane. Each ship visit now contributes approximately $620,000 to the local economy.
Looking ahead, the port is expected to facilitate more than 150 cruise calls from 13 different cruise lines during the 2024–2025 season, indicating Brisbane’s growing status as a leading cruise destination. The cruising industry is projected to generate $700 million for Queensland over the next decade, demonstrating the terminal’s importance for the region’s future development in tourism.
