Nice, France Takes Bold Step: Bans Large Cruise Ships to Tackle Overtourism
Nice, a prominent city on the French Riviera, has recently implemented a policy aimed at addressing overtourism by banning large cruise ships. On January 21, 2025, Mayor Christian Estrosi announced this significant measure, prohibiting the docking of cruise ships that carry more than 900 passengers or exceed 190 meters (623 feet) in length.
This decision is part of a larger initiative focused on enhancing sustainability in the region. Initially, discussions suggested a total ban on cruise ships, but Estrosi clarified that the restrictions will apply only to larger vessels. The mayor’s concerns stem from the economic and environmental impacts these ships have on local communities. He characterized the passengers of large cruise ships as "low-cost clientele" who do not contribute significantly to local businesses while generating considerable waste.
The ban is set to come into effect by July 1, 2025, with the mayor actively seeking to cancel any remaining scheduled cruises before that date. Additionally, Cannes is considering similar restrictions, indicating a potential shift in policy among popular cruise destinations in the area. This follows Venice’s recent decision to limit access for larger ships, which has also resulted in these vessels being redirected to industrial ports, requiring shuttle bus transportation for passengers to reach the city.
