Ponant’s Commandant Charcot Set to Make a Comeback in the Arctic for Winter 2026-27
Ponant’s Le Commandant Charcot is set to return to the Arctic for the winter season of 2026-27, following a successful season in the region. The icebreaker will conduct 15 expeditions in the Baltic, Scandinavia, and St. Lawrence River, with voyages scheduled between October 2026 and February 2027.
Departures will originate from Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Canada, offering guests a unique winter experience in the Arctic. Ponant has crafted the itineraries to provide travelers opportunities to explore snowy landscapes, charming villages, and illuminated cities, all while potentially viewing the Northern Lights and immersing themselves in local winter traditions.
Noteworthy highlights include two sailings to the Gulf of Bothnia, visiting UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the High Coast archipelago, Old Rauma, and Gammelstad Church Town. Additionally, there will be two expeditions from Quebec that invite guests to experience the St. Lawrence River in its winter splendor.
This return comes after Ponant introduced its first winter season in the Arctic during 2024-25. Before the Arctic season, Le Commandant Charcot will head back to Antarctica for winter expeditions running from October 2025 to March 2026, featuring itineraries that span from 12 to 29 nights, exploring regions like East Antarctica, the Weddell Sea, and the Ross Sea.
Launched in 2021 by Fincantieri’s VARD shipyard, Le Commandant Charcot is the cruise industry’s first icebreaker, equipped with a dual-fuel propulsion system and holding a Polar Class 2 certification, allowing it to navigate some of the most remote polar regions while adhering to modern environmental and safety standards.
