Port Torshavn (Faroes) Enhances Operations with New Dual-Purpose Terminal
The Port of Torshavn in the Faroe Islands is moving forward with the construction of a DKK 70 million (EUR 9.4M) passenger terminal, expected to be completed by June 2026. This new terminal will accommodate both cruise passengers and ferry traffic, shifting from the previous infrastructure that focused solely on single-use operations.
The design encompasses a 2000 m² terminal space within a larger 7000 m² structure, which will house office facilities for a Faroese ferry operator. A notable aspect of the development is its commitment to sustainability, utilizing ocean thermal energy conversion for heating, a system already in place at another port-owned building of the same size.
The terminal will be co-owned with Smyril Line, which operates a ro-ro (cargo) and a ro-pax ferry, named Norrona. Ferry passengers will directly access the facility via gangways, while cruise tourists will be transported to the dockside.
In a bid to enhance operations, the terminal will feature dedicated immigration and customs facilities, ensuring smoother processing for non-EU passengers traveling through Denmark’s Faroe archipelago, despite the Faroes’ Schengen membership.
