SS United States: The Historic Transatlantic Liner Set to Transform into an Artificial Reef

The historic SS United States, an iconic transatlantic liner built in 1951, has begun its transformation into an artificial reef. After three decades of being moored along Philadelphia’s Delaware River, the ship set sail on February 19, heading for Mobile, Alabama. It completed the 1,800-mile journey two days ahead of schedule, arriving on March 3.

Susan Gibbs, president of the SS United States Conservancy, expressed excitement that the vessel, renowned historically as the fastest ocean liner, has returned to the waves for the first time in 28 years. Passersby along the eastern seaboard were captivated by its grandeur.

In Mobile, the SS United States will undergo extensive remediation to remove components such as equipment from the command bridge, engine room, and any hazardous materials, including asbestos. This preparation phase is expected to take the remainder of the year.

Once remediation is complete, the ship will move to Okaloosa County, Florida, where plans are in place to sink it to create the world’s largest artificial reef. Additionally, documentary filmmakers are working on a project to chronicle the storied history of this legendary liner.
