Record Numbers Expected for Great Lakes Passenger Cruises in 2025

The Great Lakes region has seen a significant increase in international tourism, particularly through freshwater cruising, positioning Milwaukee’s port as a key player in this trend. As the 2025 cruise season approaches, industry leaders and local officials recently convened to discuss the anticipated growth in maritime tourism.

From late April to mid-October, over 22,000 passengers are expected to cruise the Great Lakes, reflecting a nearly 10% increase compared to 2024. This surge will be supported by eight vessels making over 700 port calls, resulting in upwards of 150,000 cruise passenger visits. This influx is projected to yield a $230 million economic impact on the region, marking a 15% increase from prior year assessments.

Cathy Domanico, the tourism director for Cruise the Great Lakes, emphasized the economic benefits that cruising brings to communities across the region, stating that a diverse range of cruise options caters to various customer interests, enhancing their travel experience.

Port Milwaukee, serving as a turnaround port for several cruises, projects to receive 22 calls from six vessels, welcoming approximately 11,000 passengers—down from 27 calls and 13,568 passengers in 2024. This reduction is largely attributed to Viking’s decision to operate only one of its two expedition vessels on the Great Lakes this season. Viking made its debut at Port Milwaukee in 2022 with its large vessels, Octantis and Polaris.

Despite the reduction, Viking plans to resume operating both vessels in 2026, which port director Jackie Q. Carter anticipates could lead to record passenger and vessel numbers at Port Milwaukee.

To accommodate future growth, a new South Shore Cruise Dock is set to begin construction, targeting a spring 2026 completion. This $17 million project receives $5 million in funding from city taxpayers through recent budget allocations. The dock’s depth will support larger vessels, aligning with efforts to establish Milwaukee as a premier cruise destination.

Viking will again be the first cruise ship to dock at Port Milwaukee this season, arriving on April 28, and the port is excited to welcome back Victory Cruise Lines after a seven-year absence.

Local, state, and industry officials are optimistic about the future of cruising in the Great Lakes and its positive impact on Milwaukee’s economy.
