Embracing the Waves: A Florida Couple’s Journey to Full-Time Living on a Cruise Ship

Oakland Park residents Jim and Chris Guld are embarking on an adventurous new chapter as they prepare to sell their home and live full-time aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey cruise ship. This decision comes after they spent 14 years traveling the lower 48 states in a recreational vehicle, which they fondly reflect upon as a time filled with exploration and teaching.

The couple is not worried about the potential cramped quarters of their 140-square-foot stateroom; they are excited about the countless activities available on the ship, including exercise classes and entertainment. Their journey will take them to 425 ports in over 140 countries during a voyage called the “Continual World Cruise.” Starting on April 20 in Cartagena, Colombia, they plan to remain aboard for at least seven years.

Villa Vie Residences, based in Pembroke Pines, operates the Villa Vie Odyssey, which offers affordable long-term living options at sea. Mikael Petterson, the company chairman, expressed enthusiasm about the Gulds joining the onboard community, which has seen 354 of its 480 cabins sold to long-term residents since the company acquired the ship in 2023.

Jim and Chris, both tech-savvy and seasoned travelers, met in the 1980s when Chris ran a computer training center. Their shared interests in technology and travel merged, leading them to create "Geeks on Tour," an educational platform where they post travelogues and software tutorials on their YouTube channel.

While they initially considered a cabin with a balcony, the couple opted for a more budget-friendly room after a trial cruise. They’ve found the onboard community to be lively and engaging, hosting various seminars and talks among the residents.

The decision to live aboard the cruise ship was met with mixed feelings from family. Jim’s son expressed concern, though Chris emphasized their independence and readiness for their next adventure. They feel healthy and capable, believing now is the perfect time to embrace this unique lifestyle choice.
