Royal Caribbean’s Star OTS Sets Sail for Sea Trials After Successful LNG Bunkering

Preparations are underway for the sea trials of Royal Caribbean’s latest ship, the Star of the Seas, having recently completed its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation at Meyer Turku in Finland on April 10th. The LNG fueling, executed by the bunker vessel Coralius from Norway, took approximately 12 hours to transfer the cryogenic LNG into the ship’s storage tanks.

This significant achievement facilitates the testing of the ship’s dual-fuel propulsion systems, which will use LNG—known for being a cleaner alternative to traditional marine fuels. Star of the Seas is equipped with six dual-fuel engines provided by Wärtsilä that are now prepared for real-world maritime testing conditions.

Sea trials are expected to commence in the upcoming weeks for the 365-meter-long vessel, which has a gross tonnage of 250,800 GT. Scheduled for delivery in August 2025, Star of the Seas will operate weekly cruises from Port Canaveral, Florida.

This ship follows the delivery of the Icon of the Seas in December 2023 and is part of Royal Caribbean’s initiative to expand its fleet powered by LNG, aiming to enhance sustainability and reduce emissions in the cruise industry.
