Port of New Orleans Sets New Record for Cruise Passenger Movements

In March 2025, the Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) achieved a record of 165,000 cruise passenger movements, surpassing its previous high of 155,000 set in March 2023. This milestone comes after a record year in 2024, with the port handling over 1.2 million cruise passengers.

Port NOLA stands out among U.S. ports as it facilitates both deepwater/ocean and river cruises. Its two terminals, Erato Street and Julia Street, are conveniently located in downtown, just a short walk from the French Quarter.

Notably, around 90% of cruise passengers come from out of state, with 70% of these visitors spending a day or two in New Orleans before or after their cruise. This influx results in more than 300,000 hotel room nights and contributes over $125 million in local economic activity each year.

In 2024, Carnival Cruise Line (CCL) established a five-year agreement to base two ships—The Valor and The Liberty—year-round in New Orleans, marking its 30th year of operation from the port. Royal Caribbean International (RCI) returned with the Brilliance of the Seas and plans to introduce the Mariner of the Seas in 2026. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has also extended its five-year agreement and added service with the Norwegian Escape, in addition to ongoing sailings from the Norwegian Getaway.

Port NOLA also supports river cruise operations with six homeported vessels, featuring services from American Cruise Lines and Viking River Cruises. Viking’s North American cruise, which began in 2022, was notably built in Louisiana.

The continuous expansion of cruise line partnerships at Port NOLA reflects the increasing global demand for New Orleans as a sought-after cruise destination.
