Royal Caribbean’s Star OTS Prepares for Sea Trials After Successful LNG Bunkering
Preparations for the sea trials of Royal Caribbean’s newest vessel, Star of the Seas, have progressed significantly with the successful completion of its inaugural liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation on April 10th at Meyer Turku’s shipyard in Turku, Finland. This operation, conducted by the LNG bunker vessel Coralius, involved a meticulously coordinated 12-hour fueling process, marking the first time cryogenic LNG was transferred into the ship’s storage tanks.
This milestone allows for the start of testing the ship’s dual-fuel propulsion systems, which utilize LNG—a cleaner alternative to conventional marine fuels. The ship is equipped with six dual-fuel engines supplied by Wärtsilä that are now poised to undergo trials under live maritime conditions.
Sea trials for Star of the Seas are expected to commence in the next few weeks. The vessel, which is 365 meters long with a gross tonnage of 250,800 GT, is set for delivery in August 2025 and will offer week-long cruises from Port Canaveral, Florida.
Star of the Seas is the second ship in Royal Caribbean’s ICON Class, following the Icon of the Seas, which was delivered in December 2023. Both vessels are part of the company’s commitment to expanding its LNG-powered fleet, focusing on reducing emissions and enhancing sustainable cruising practices.
