Celebrating 20 Years of Shore Power: Carnival Corporation’s Commitment to Seattle’s Sustainable Port Practices
Carnival Corporation recently celebrated two decades of using shore power in Seattle, marking a significant achievement in its partnership with the Port of Seattle. This initiative began on June 18, 2005, when the Diamond Princess became the first cruise ship to connect to shore power in the city.
Seattle was the second location globally to implement shore power technology, following Juneau, Alaska, where Carnival Corporation’s Princess Cruises had initially introduced the concept. Robert Morgenstern, senior vice president of Alaska Operations for Carnival Corporation, expressed pride in the company’s pioneering efforts in this area and highlighted the collaborative relationship with the Port of Seattle that made it possible.
Steve Metruck, CEO of the Port of Seattle, noted that their joint efforts facilitated the installation of shore power at all three cruise berths in Seattle. The original shore power system was located at the former Terminal 30, and following the opening of the Smith Cove Cruise Terminal at Pier 91 in 2009, the equipment was relocated and continues to operate there.
Ryan Calkins, a Port of Seattle Commissioner, praised the collaboration, stating that it has positioned Seattle as one of the few cruise homeports equipped with shore power at multiple berths, facilitating advancements in sustainable solutions with partners like Carnival Corporation and Seattle City Light.
Carnival Corporation’s commitment to shore power also fostered the success of local business Watts Marine, which has gained recognition as a leader in the field globally.
