Mossel Bay Launches State-of-the-Art Cruise Reception Facility in South Africa

The Port of Mossel Bay in South Africa has recently inaugurated its new Cruise Reception Facility, marking a significant milestone in enhancing the country’s cruise industry. This facility welcomed its first vessel, the SH Diana, which is operated by Swan Hellenic. The SH Diana is currently on a 15-day cruise that travels from Mombasa to Cape Town, carrying 167 passengers and 127 crew members. This opening reflects the Transnet National Ports Authority’s (TNPA) commitment to improving operations within South Africa’s cruise sector.

The newly constructed facility aims to facilitate smoother and safer cruise operations, specifically addressing the challenges of handling ships at anchor. Its strategic location adjacent to the quay allows for efficient passenger transfers from the ship to the port. The terminal includes various amenities like processing areas and shelter, catering to the needs of small-ship and expedition operators that are increasingly frequenting South African coastal waters. TNPA has emphasized that the facility’s design streamlines the experience for visitors, allowing them to navigate safety, customs, and transfer processes comfortably.

One major goal of this development is to centralize all cruise-related activities, which fosters better coordination between port authorities, tourism organizations, and service providers. Phyllis Difeto, the Acting Chief Executive of TNPA, mentioned that this facility is a direct response to the needs of tourism partners and is intended to bolster Mossel Bay’s reputation as a premier cruise destination. The project embodies a commitment to sustainable tourism while promoting economic growth in port cities.

Built to meet international standards, the terminal will serve as the hub for immigration, customs, and port health agencies. Its completion is part of the broader Transnet Reinvent for Growth strategy, which aims to enhance operational efficiencies and provide greater value for port users. The investment of R22 million in the facility is part of ongoing initiatives to elevate the port’s competitiveness in the marine tourism market.

In recent years, Mossel Bay has seen a steady increase in cruise traffic, establishing itself as a regular stop for expedition travel companies operating along the Garden Route. For the 2024-2025 season, the port recorded 21 cruise arrivals, welcoming over 13,000 passengers. For the upcoming 2025-2026 season, 23 arrivals are already scheduled, with expectations for further growth as cruise lines continue to diversify their travel itineraries.
