The Port of Philadelphia is set to revitalize the local cruise industry with the opening of the new PhilaPort Cruise Terminal next spring. This development, in collaboration with Norwegian Cruise Line, will bring the first cruise ships back to the region since 2011, marking a significant comeback for local tourism.
Situated on a 16-acre site in Tinicum Township, the terminal is poised to host over 41 sailings annually, catering to popular destinations like Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, New England, and Canada. Norwegian Cruise Line’s commitment includes a seven-year agreement, ensuring Philadelphia serves as an exclusive homeport for the company’s cruise brands during this time.
Officials express optimism about the potential economic impact of the terminal, projecting it will generate about 2,185 jobs and approximately $300 million in annual economic activity within Pennsylvania. The upcoming year, which includes major celebrations for Philadelphia’s 250th anniversary and other significant events like the World Cup and MLB All-Star Game, is expected to amplify the city’s tourism appeal.
