Coral Adventurer Runs Aground: Emergency Evacuation for Stranded Guests
Coral Expeditions’ vessel, the Coral Adventurer, ran aground on a reef off the eastern coast of Papua New Guinea, affecting over 80 guests and 40 crew members onboard. The incident occurred on Saturday while the ship was navigating through rough sea currents in Morobe province.
Reports indicated that the Coral Adventurer, which has a passenger capacity of 120, was on a 12-day expedition cruise that began in Cairns, Australia, before the grounding took place. Morobe’s Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Samson Siguyaru, stated that the ship had a significant tilt and was judged temporarily unseaworthy, leading to its detention until additional assessments could be done.
After an inspection revealed no visible damage or pollution from the incident, Coral Expeditions chose to conclude the cruise a day early and arranged flights for the guests back to Australia.
Attempts to re-float the ship using its engines and assistance from a tugboat were unsuccessful. Additionally, Morobe’s provincial governor, Rainbo Paita, highlighted that the vessel was navigating an atypical route for the area, which is known for its challenging reefs, placing it around 30 kilometers from the city of Lae.
