Norovirus Outbreak: 89 Cases Confirmed on Holland America’s ms Rotterdam
A recent voyage on Holland America Line’s ms Rotterdam resulted in an outbreak of norovirus, affecting nearly 90 individuals onboard. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 81 of the 2,593 passengers and 8 crew members reported symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting.
The affected cruise period spanned from December 28 to January 9, with the ship departing from Fort Lauderdale and visiting various Caribbean destinations including Curaçao, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Jamaica. Holland America Line stated that most of the cases were mild and resolved quickly. They emphasized their commitment to passenger and crew safety, noting that a thorough sanitization of the vessel was conducted following its return to Fort Lauderdale.
In 2025, CDC data recorded 23 outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruise ships that warranted public notification, with norovirus being the main cause in 17 of those cases. This trend aligns with previous years, highlighting the persistent challenge of norovirus in cruise operations.
