Heroic Rescue at Sea: MV Isle of Islay Saves Lives During Delivery Passage to Scotland
During its delivery journey to Scotland, the newly constructed CalMac ferry, MV Isle of Islay, was involved in a maritime rescue operation off the coast of Morocco. The Ro-Pax vessel, on its way from a Turkish shipyard, encountered poor weather conditions that forced it to anchor at Gibraltar before navigating through Moroccan waters.
While dealing with these conditions, the crew spotted an individual in the sea. They quickly initiated recovery procedures, deploying the fast rescue craft to retrieve the man. Once he was safely on board, the ferry’s crew provided care for several days until they handed him over to Moroccan authorities. The fleet management director from CalMac praised the crew’s professionalism, highlighting their training to conduct maritime rescues efficiently, even under difficult circumstances.
MV Isle of Islay is the first of four vessels being built in Turkey and has faced challenging weather during its delivery. Reports indicated sustained winds over 30 knots and gusts above 50 knots, necessitating the ferry to stop off Morocco’s east coast before proceeding to Almeria, Spain, where it will wait for a favorable weather window to continue to A Coruna in northern Spain. Following that, it will navigate the Bay of Biscay, notorious for rough seas, and eventually head towards the UK.
The management director noted that winter deliveries often subject vessels to severe maritime conditions, compounded by recent storms affecting the Iberian Peninsula. He assured that the crew remains committed to advancing the ferry’s journey to Scotland, with specific arrival times to be confirmed closer to the date.
Once operational in Scottish waters, MV Isle of Islay will accommodate 450 passengers, 100 cars, and 14 lorries, servicing routes to the islands of Islay and Jura.
