Carnival Sunshine Shifts to Norfolk as CCL Concludes Operations in Charleston

Carnival Cruise Line has officially ended its operations in Charleston, South Carolina, as the Carnival Sunshine completed its final voyage from the port on December 30, 2024. The Sunshine first arrived in Charleston in 2019, marking a significant investment for the port, bringing modern cruise facilities to the East Coast city.

In the past, Carnival emphasized Charleston’s strategic importance within its deployment strategy, placing ships near major U.S. population centers along the East and West Coasts, as well as the Gulf of Mexico, to make cruising more accessible for guests. Since commencing operations in Charleston in 2010, the cruise line aimed to serve the half of the U.S. population that could easily reach one of its 20 North American homeports within a day’s drive.

The decision to conclude operations at Charleston was influenced by the expiration of the contract between Carnival and the city, which ultimately decided not to continue serving as the homeport for the cruise line.

Looking towards the future, the Carnival Sunshine will move to Norfolk, Virginia, to establish year-round sailings. Christine Duffy, Carnival President, expressed her enthusiasm in 2022 regarding the ship’s role in enhancing services from Norfolk’s Half Moone Cruise Terminal, signaling a new chapter for Carnival’s operations in the region. Plans are in place to open bookings for 2025, catering to guests from the southeastern U.S. who are eager to embark on their cruise adventures.
